As we move into the last month of 2010 many are reflecting the best the year had to offer and shifting their focus on what’s next for 2011. As I sit and read the news this week, I am overwhelmed by predictions and forecasts of emerging trends and impending changes in technology. Will apps continue to gain colossal momentum? What will the newest social networking platform look like? Who will top Forbes lists of the richest people and most successful companies next year?

The last few months have been busy for us at iPal. Personally, I have been spending a great deal of time meeting with industry leaders, networking at Trade Shows, talking with competitors, presenting to prospective clients and discussing new business deals with our partners. The Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD) is hosting a one of a kind Conference and Trade Show in Toronto ON this month. From November 17th to the 19th, the city of Toronto and CSTD will play host to industry leaders from all areas of workplace training and development. Instructional Designers, eLearning Developers, Facilitators, Performance Consultants and many more will come together at what CSTD calls “the largest gathering of training and development professionals in Canada”.

Who do you think of when you think about colorful and rich animations, engaging characters and magical story lines? For me, The Walt Disney Company is the first thing that comes to mind.
I don’t know if it is because I am still a kid inside or because Disney has always been amazing at capturing a magical feeling in the hearts of people young and old, but for whatever reason, it works. People all over the world associate high quality entertainment and products with the creators of magical characters like Mickey Mouse and Snow White.

Business Takes Action (BTA) is a Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters initiative aimed at promoting the benefits of hiring qualified People with Disabilities to meet skill shortages” in the workplace. BTA is a government-funded program focused on ensuring organizations in Ontario and across Canada are up to date with the information, policies and tools necessary to employ and accommodate People with Disabilities. September is here and for many of us our focus has shifted back to education, best practices and how technology in the classroom has been evolving over the years.
I recently stumbled on a video presented by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that discusses these very issues. In this video, Bill Gates discusses the future of the textbook and how the advancement of technology is almost certainly going to make the paper textbook obsolete in today’s classrooms. He argues that paper textbooks do not afford the necessary self-assessment tools and interactivity that online textbooks and online learning does.
